The entrance to Sacramento Zoo is one of the most iconic sights in the state, and has been in place since 1961. These distinctively-shaped awnings at the entrance to the zoo are called hyperbolic paraboloids, and give the zoo’s entrance its unique look and feel. The smaller buildings are the entry and exit points of the zoo, while the larger structure was the site of the Discovery Room, which has since been converted into an air conditioned space for younger children to cool down in when visiting the zoo during the warm summer months.
Unfortunately due to issues with dry rot, and the potential for structural problems based on that, the entrance to the Sacramento Zoo now requires a complete overhaul. While every effort is being made to preserve the original look and feel of the entrance, it may be necessary for the buildings to be torn down and replaced for health and safety reasons.
